Elounda Peninsula, Elounda, Crete 72053, Greece

Along this coastline you will of course find plenty of beautiful beaches to explore, but there’s a fair smattering of culture on this side of the island too. Just 15 minutes north of Porto Elounda, this coast is home to the charming little fishing village of Plaka. You can wander the old streets here before finding a taverna on the water’s edge where you can sip a glass of wine and enjoy views across to Spinalonga. For centuries, this famous island has been home to a fortress that once protected the port from attack, and in the 20th century it was home to a leper colony - making it the focus of several books and television series. You can catch a boat across to the island to explore the fortress and enjoy the magnificent views.

In the other direction, a 15-minute drive south of Porto Elounda, the larger city of Agios Nikolaos is well worth a visit. This coastal city is full of cute cafés and shopping opportunities, and also offers an archaeological museum for history buffs to enjoy. A little in land from Agios Nikolaos, the small village of Kritsa is one of the oldest on Crete. Tucked away on the hillside, Kritsa is home to a remarkable Byzantine church that houses incredible medieval frescoes, and is also the best place to start the scenic hike to Kritsa Gorge.
