Piazza della Chiesa, 9, 39050 Fie' Allo Sciliar BZ, Italy

Presided over by soaring peaks and surrounded by rolling hills, few places are as idyllic as Fiè allo Sciliar (also known as Völs am Schlern), an enchanting village at the foot of the Dolomites in South Tyrol. In summer, area must-dos include hiking, walking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, while in winter the sugar-dusted landscape becomes a European snow-sports destination.

Stroll through the village's cobbled streets to see quaint alpine architecture, cute country churches and a sprinkling of local shops and eateries, while the imposing Gothic Prösels Castle is just an 8-minute drive or a scenic hour's walk away. Further out, the lovely towns of Bolzano, Bressanone, Merano and Vipiteno are great for a day-trip, and a drive in any direction is sure to take you past the occasional castle ruin.
